East St. Louis Feed the Hungry Program

 
A new program of ministry offered through the Mission Center is the Feed the Hungry Program. Larry Drury has a dream to “Feed the Children” in the impoverished area of East St. Louis. This dream has grown as God has touched the dream and it has become a vision. In its first summer of operation, The East St. Louis Feed the Hungry Project served 3100 nutritional lunch meals and 2900 supplemental meals from June 21"through August 12,2010. Not only did the project fulfill the goal of feeding the poor and underprivileged children in the target area; the project provided shoes to children who were wearing shoes without soles, taught children their given name because they only knew themselves by their nickname, introduced the alphabet, phonics, and emphasized the use of counting, addition, subtraction and the multiplication table. Staff volunteered to combed, styled and cut children's hair that had been poorly kept so that children could return to school with a positive self-image. The Project provided a safe environment, nurturing friendships and competitive activities that allowed each child to identify their own strengths.
